The Afghan Student Union (AfSU) is a registered charity operating within England and Wales. Our executive board is known as our "Board of Directors", and they are responsible for day-to-day management of the union and operational responsibilities.
The AfSU Board of Trustees is a non-executive trusteeship which looks at advising and holding to account AfSU's Board of Directors. As a Trustee at AfSU, your role will be to ensure AfSU's strategic vision aligns with legal requirements and is being articulated in the necessary manner to external parties/organisations. This includes operational, logistics and financial matters.
The role will require you to attend quarterly meetings with the full Board (4 in a year) to discuss AfSU's quarterly progress, expectations and legal compliance matters should these arise.
Meetings will be held in-person at King's College London on a quarterly basis, these will typically be over the course of 2 hours. The meetings will involve the AfSU Executive Director reporting on AfSU's progress, with the Trustees being given the opportunity to feedback comments.
The full specification of the role is as follows:
Advisory: you will be expected to advise the AfSU Board of Directors on matters upon which you hold expert knowledge in. Auxiliary: providing recommendations towards "change to comply", a process by which we translate our operational desires to tangible legal solutions. Approval: you will be responsible, as a Board, for checking over and signing annual accounts which are presented to you by AfSU's Executive Director and explained to you by external auditors/accountants. Accountability: you will need to question, deliberate, and ensure AfSU's executive board is being held accountable for the actions for which they are pursuing. As an independent trustee, you need to ensure you have no conflicts of interest and sign these interests in our declaration of interests register. To become an AfSU Trustee, you:
Must be at least 18 years old. Must have a genuine interest in the AfSU's mission and purpose. Should possess relevant skills, knowledge, or experience that align with the AfSU's needs (e.g., finance, legal, marketing, grant-making/affording). Must be able to commit sufficient time and energy to fulfill trustee responsibilities. Should have the ability to work effectively as part of a team and contribute to decision-making processes. Should have good communication and interpersonal skills. Must be trustworthy, ethical, and committed to acting in the best interests of AfSU and our beneficiaries. Should have a willingness to learn and develop as a trustee, including attending relevant training or workshops. Should be prepared to comply with legal and regulatory requirements governing charities and trusteeship (e.g., understanding and fulfilling legal duties, maintaining proper financial records, reporting obligations, etc.). Must be willing to adhere to the charity's governing documents, policies, and procedures. You also:
Must not have any criminal record or history of civil suits being brought against you successfully. Must not be at risk of bankruptcy to comply with legal requirements. Must not have any conflicts of interest that could compromise your ability to make impartial decisions. Your name will be publicly listed as a charity trustee, AfSU's registered charity number is 1203499. The AfSU Board of Directors is responsible for the management of the union. They are the designated body of leadership and will oversee all activities this union undertakes. By becoming a Policy Writer & Advisor, you will assist, and be part of, AfSUs Administration Team and will be part of managing the union's activities.
As a Policy & Compliance Officer, you will be helping write key documents for the union. These may include master policies, team directives and general management directives. We’d recommend someone who holds an interest in writing complex documents apply to this post.
It is recommended that you hold some knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel. You must be able to dedicate time to the AfSU project where required and it is recommended you hold prior knowledge/experience of AfSU activities. The individual will be trained in policy writing and will be working alongside colleagues who are able to help you develop yourself both academically and professionally.
There are official rules and procedures for charities to help prevent conflicts and help volunteers work towards an organization's goals and avoid damaging the reputation of its brand. Individuals who are assigned a policy should be able to understand the clear guidelines of what AfSU expects to be written, you should be willing to submit drafts, amend feedback, and provide us with advice on how best to approach legal issues. You will be paid per each board-approved policy you submit to us. Any individual who is wanting to apply to AfSU should understand the law, and guidelines of writing policies, with strong understandings on topics pertinent to charity law. AfSU prides itself on having a strong ethical, moral, and legal foundation when carrying out its work and we expect the same of our members. What we're looking for:
You should be familiar with Safeguarding policies and relevant responsibilities. You should be up to date on Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) 2023 statute laws and their application to our policies. You should understand Prevent Duty concepts, DSL roles, SCR Records or be willing to be taught on how these apply to your role. You will be paid per policy you produce, however the bulk of your work will involve advising and updating AfSU on legal and compliance matters that arise on a regular (bi-weekly) basis, and so it is recommended you keep up to date with legal news channels on education, charities law, and similar concepts. The AfSU Board of Directors is responsible for the management of the union. They are the designated body of leadership and will oversee all activities this union undertakes. By becoming an Advisor to the Board, you will assist AfSUs Leadership Team and will be part of managing the union's activities.
As an Advisor, you will be assisting in the management of the union by liaising directly with the Board of Directors to advise them on issues, provide connections and give valuable insights into how AfSU can develop itself as a brand. You should be able to use your connections to expand the AfSU project and advise the Board on topics that they require advisement on.
Topics and projects you may be able to advise on are broad, and may include general or specific areas of our brand, presence, national/international connections, our umbrella programme, or strategic advice. We prioritise your expertise, and thus the role will be shaped to fit your areas of knowledge.
It is recommended that you:
Hold knowledge of Zoom and Microsoft Applications. Have expertise (i.e. professional experience) or qualifications (whether you're currently studying or have graduated) in the area you wish to advise on. Hold connections or strong insights in the area you hope to advise us on. You must be able to dedicate time to the AfSU project where required and it is recommended you hold prior knowledge/experience of AfSU activities. You should be willing to attend Team AfSU events and participate in the union's activities to the best of your ability. You should also demonstrate professionalism and take initiative. We encourage confidence in suggesting new ideas and concepts. The Advisor role is a voluntary, unpaid position however AfSU can be used as a reference point on CVs/LinkedIn. Help shape the dialogue on Afghanistan and invite interested members to attend our academic events that help shape your society's members academic, personal, and cultural lives. AfSU has previously hosted networking events (with more than a hundred participants), book talks, lecture series, discussions, and more. Our conferences attract government departments, the legal sector, finance, medicine, nursing, and a wide variety of other areas which will be of interest to your society's membership. You will also be assisting in the general management of the union. You'll be able to influence AfSU Operations and help foster an active, confident, engaging and dedicated Afghan student community for years to come. There are also opportunities for paid roles to be taken, such as the Subject Tutor role for our various tuition centres that are across London.
Universities, upon joining, must agree to the AfSU Partnerships Agreement. We expect to hold universities to account for actions they take, and for universities to hold us to account for actions we take. In return for a university's participation in AfSU, we offer the various incentives outlined earlier.
AfSU reserves the right to warn, suspend and terminate partnerships between us and university societies dependant on whether actions taken by the committee members of university societies violates the AfSU Offences (External) Policy. AfSU will take action based on internal policies, including the AfSU Suspensions & Terminations Policy. AfSU takes discipline extremely seriously: the union will not tolerate behaviour which is deemed unbecoming of a member of the union, and we will be holding societies and their committees to an incredibly high standard.
Society members: your Presidents (or an authorised committee member) must fill out this form. You cannot apply to the AfSU Bursary or Scholarship Funds unless your university society is an AfSU partner. By joining AfSU, you're joining a growing community of like-minded Afghan students who want to grow the Afghan diaspora through education.
Once you have completed the form, you'll be invited to a short meeting with the AfSU Director of Operations to (a) determine how the partnership between your society and AfSU will work, (b) the AfSU Partnership Agreement and (c) what your society would like to benefit from by using AfSU services.

The Brand & Marketing Team is responsible for creating social media posts using software like Canva. You may be involved in the processes of making logos and other multimedia items. TikToks, reels and other form of video would also be something that a member of this team would be interested in. This post is for individuals interested in multimedia and holds good knowledge about social media and is happy to interact with people on a daily basis. We'd recommend the following characteristics for individuals interested in this role:
Strong knowledge of Instagram, LinkedIn & Facebook. Confident in using these applications and can generate content for them as given by Subject Tutors and/or Operations leads. Ability to communicate with people by responding to messages, emails and other forms of communication mediums used. Knowledge of Canva is a benefit however not a requirement: we are happy to teach applicants in how to use Canva however we'd like for applicants to demonstrate knowledge of design and post creation. Strong sense of teamwork, leadership and creativity. Must be proactive and happy to dedicate time to the work they produce. This is an unpaid role. Position: BM1/AfSU/2 Brand & Marketing Officer (BMO)

Subject Tutors (ST) are responsible for assisting students who contact AfSU for help and assist them using the subject team they have been allocated to. The ST usually performs the following roles, but is not limited to:
(a) assisting in the running and maintenance of the AfSU Tuition Centre by tutoring students, in an in-person setting, in groups of 3-5 students; (b) assisting the Senior Subject Tutor for their group and helping students on a day-to-day basis with what they need (this may involve UCAS Help (interviews, personal statement reviews and the like)); (c) holding events or being involved in academic conferences; (d) reports to the Director of Tuition Operations. We recommend STs have the following skill sets:
Strong sense of belonging and working with a team. Keen on gaining experience and knowledge of hosting events with large groups of people (usually 100+). Happy to invest time into making AfSU events successful whilst maintaining a balanced amount of work and sharing this amongst the team you are assigned to. Happy to work with younger students who require help with their academic lives. Able to dedicate time to this and assist people to the best of their ability. Flexible with their time. Able to communicate on and use Teams/Word/Excel. You should be willing to attend Team AfSU events and participate in the union's activities to the best of your ability. You should also demonstrate professionalism and take initiative. We encourage confidence in suggesting new ideas and concepts. AfSU requires the following from all applicants:
A Disclosure and Barring Check (Enhanced) - valid for the entirety of your time as a tutor for AfSU, this can be provided to you by AfSU should you not have one already. A valid UK Passport or equivalent allowing you to work in the United Kingdom. You must not have a criminal record. If you are accepted, you will be required to attend mandatory subject tutor trainings (4 trainings per academic year) to ensure the highest level of quality in the tuition services AfSU provides. Safeguarding forms an intrinsic part of our organisation. You must be willing to read the KCSIE 2023 Part One statutory guidance on keeping children safe in education as well as attend/pass safeguarding trainings (online and in-house). You will be expected to abide by the AfSU Constitution and various other policies which you will be acquainted with should your application be accepted.
