The AfSU Board of Directors is responsible for the management of the union. They are the designated body of leadership and will oversee all activities this union undertakes. By becoming a Secretary to the Board, you gain a seat as part of AfSUs Leadership Team and will be part of managing the union's activities.
The Secretary to the Board of Directors helps in writing key documents, policies and submissions for the union. These may include master policies, team directives and general management directives. We’d recommend someone who holds an interest in writing documents/emails apply to this post.
You will be given access to AfSU mailboxes and be tasked with responding to emails from external organisations such as interested parties, governments, universities and press agencies. You will be trained in taking accurate minutes of complex meetings and given the necessary equipment to do so.
You will also be assisting in the general management of the union. This may involve calendar planning for when events, conferences and other items may take place. It is recommended that you hold some knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel. You must be able to dedicate time to the AfSU project where required and it is recommended you hold prior knowledge/experience of AfSU activities. You will work closely with AfSU’s ED and manage their schedule and calendar requirements using basic reminder and calendar software.

This is an unpaid role. AfSU offers various paths of progression, you may use AfSU as a reference point on CVs/LinkedIn. Joining AfSU also means you have access to internship and other academic opportunities unique to AfSU. You'll also be joining a community of like minded people who have similar goals and interests to yourself. Previous progression from this position has been into Director positions.

Help shape the dialogue on Afghanistan's diaspora and invite interested members to attend our academic events that help shape your society's members academic and personal lives. AfSU has previously hosted networking events (with more than a hundred participants), book talks, lecture series, discussions, and more. Our conferences attract government departments, the legal sector, finance, medicine, nursing, and a wide variety of other areas which will be of interest to your society's membership. You will also be assisting in the general management of the union. You'll be able to influence AfSU Operations and help foster an active, confident, engaging and dedicated student community for years to come.
Universities, upon joining, must agree to the AfSU Partnerships Agreement. We expect to hold universities to account for actions they take, and for universities to hold us to account for actions we take. In return for a university's participation in AfSU, we offer the various incentives outlined earlier.
AfSU reserves the right to warn, suspend and terminate partnerships between us and university societies dependant on whether actions taken by the committee members of university societies violates the AfSU Offences (External) Policy. We take discipline extremely seriously: the union will not tolerate behaviour which is deemed unbecoming of a member of the union, and we will be holding societies and their committees to an incredibly high standard.
Society members: your Presidents (or an authorised committee representative) must fill out this form. Once you have completed the form, you'll be invited to a short meeting with the AfSU Director of Operations to (a) determine how the partnership between your society and AfSU will work, (b) the AfSU Partnership Agreement and (c) what your society would like to benefit from by using AfSU services.

This is an incredibly rewarding opportunity for professionals who wish to support the younger generations of Afghanistan's diaspora.
Professional Mentors (PM) are responsible for assisting students who contact AfSU for help and assist them using the subject team they have been allocated to.
You will be responsible for providing support to undergraduate/postgraduate level students with subject help or advice on entering the job market. This help will typically be through the form of emails, and will run on an ad hoc basis based on the needs of the student. We recommend meeting with the student you have been assigned to for roughly thirty minutes-one hour a month virtually on MS Teams, as well as through AfSU events.
The PM usually performs the following roles, but is not limited to:
(a) assisting in the running and maintenance of the AfSU Mentorship Programme by mentoring university level students, in an in-person or virtual setting, 1-1. (b) demonstrating proficiency in providing academic support (where possible) and providing relevant advice on entry to post-university job markets or avenues; (c) holding events or being involved in academic conferences; (d) holding subject-specific knowledge on subjects that university students may benefit from. We recommend PMs have the following skill sets:
Strong sense of belonging and working with a team. Happy to work with younger students who require help with their academic lives. Able to dedicate time to this and assist people to the best of their ability. Able to communicate on and use MS Teams. You should be willing to attend Team AfSU events and participate in the union's activities to the best of your ability. You should also demonstrate professionalism and take initiative. We encourage confidence in suggesting new ideas and concepts. AfSU requires the following from all applicants:

Student Mentors (SM) are responsible for assisting students who contact AfSU for help and assist them using the subject team they have been allocated to. You will be responsible for providing support to GCSE/A-level students with subject help or advice on entering university. This help will typically be through the form of emails, and will run on an ad hoc basis based on the needs of the student. We recommend meeting with the student you have been assigned to for roughly one hour a month.
The SM usually performs the following roles, but is not limited to:
(a) assisting in the running and maintenance of the AfSU Mentorship Programme by mentoring students, in an in-person or virtual setting, 1-1. (b) demonstrating proficiency in providing UCAS Help (interviews, personal statement reviews and the like); (c) holding events or being involved in academic conferences; (d) holding subject-specific knowledge on subjects that GCSE/A-level students may benefit from. We recommend STs have the following skill sets:
Strong sense of belonging and working with a team. Keen on gaining experience and knowledge of hosting events with large groups of people (usually 100+). Happy to invest time into making AfSU events successful whilst maintaining a balanced amount of work and sharing this amongst the team you are assigned to. Happy to work with younger students who require help with their academic lives. Able to dedicate time to this and assist people to the best of their ability. Flexible with their time. Able to communicate on and use MS Teams. You should be willing to attend Team AfSU events and participate in the union's activities to the best of your ability. You should also demonstrate professionalism and take initiative. We encourage confidence in suggesting new ideas and concepts. AfSU requires the following from all applicants:
You must be a currently enrolled UK-based university student. A Disclosure and Barring Check (Enhanced) - valid for the entirety of your time as a mentor for AfSU, this can be provided to you by AfSU should you not have one already. A valid UK Passport or equivalent allowing you to work in the United Kingdom. You must not have a criminal record. If you are accepted, you will be required to attend mandatory student mentor trainings (3 trainings per academic year) to ensure the highest level of quality in the services AfSU provides. Safeguarding forms an intrinsic part of our union. You must be willing to read the KCSIE 2023 Part One statutory guidance on keeping children safe in education as well as attend/pass safeguarding trainings (online and in-house). You will be expected to abide by the AfSU Constitution and various other policies which you will be acquainted with should your application be accepted. We take discipline extremely seriously and so you will be expected to conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times and especially as a representative of the AfSU brand. OPERATIONS OP/1 OPERATIONS OFFICER (EVENTS)
The Operations Department focuses on covering the following areas: (a) the creation and management of events, workshops and all other AfSU initiatives (b) the sub-management of resources, allocating funding and ensuring the continuity of AfSU services and (c) ensuring that AfSU remains a healthy and fun environment to work in and be part of.
The role of Events Officer would involve you to:
Support the Director and Deputy Director with the organisation of events and logistical issues. Liaise with the core AfSU departments to coordinate events and deliver timely performance. Possess exceptional operational knowledge of organising and managing a wide range of events from meetings to conferences, across different venues. Ability to work under pressure, prioritise tasks and maintain steady under changing and flexible circumstances We'd recommend applicants hold the following characteristics:
Strong sense of belonging and working with a team. Keen on gaining experience and knowledge of hosting events with large groups of people (usually 100+). Happy to invest time into making AfSU events successful whilst maintaining a balanced amount of work. Coming up with unique solutions presented by logistical challenges. The applicant should be someone who enjoys solving complex issues surrounding operational needs/requirements. Flexible with their time. AfSU can be used as a reference point on CVs/LinkedIn. The AfSU Board of Directors is responsible for the management of the union. They are the designated body of leadership and will oversee all activities this union undertakes. By becoming an Advisor to the Board, you will assist AfSUs Leadership Team and will be part of managing the union's activities.
As an Advisor, you will be assisting in the management of the union by liaising directly with the Board of Directors to advise them on issues, provide connections and give valuable insights into how AfSU can develop itself as a brand. You should be able to use your connections to expand the AfSU project and advise the Board on topics that they require advisement on.
Topics and projects you may be able to advise on are broad, and may include general or specific areas of our brand, presence, national/international connections, our umbrella programme, or strategic advice. We prioritise your expertise, and thus the role will be shaped to fit your areas of knowledge.
It is recommended that you:
Hold knowledge of Zoom and Microsoft Applications. Have expertise (i.e. professional experience) or qualifications (whether you're currently studying or have graduated) in the area you wish to advise on. Hold connections or strong insights in the area you hope to advise us on. You must be able to dedicate time to the AfSU project where required and it is recommended you hold prior knowledge/experience of AfSU activities. You should be willing to attend Team AfSU events and participate in the union's activities to the best of your ability. You should also demonstrate professionalism and take initiative. The Brand & Marketing Team is responsible for creating social media posts using software like Canva. You may be involved in the processes of making logos and other multimedia items. TikToks, reels and other form of video would also be something that a member of this team would be interested in. This post is for individuals interested in multimedia and holds good knowledge about social media and is happy to interact with people on a daily basis. We'd recommend the following characteristics for individuals interested in this role:
Strong knowledge of Instagram, LinkedIn & Facebook. Confident in using these applications and can generate content for them as given by Subject Tutors and/or Operations leads. Ability to communicate with people by responding to messages, emails and other forms of communication mediums used. Knowledge of Canva is a benefit however not a requirement: we are happy to teach applicants in how to use Canva however we'd like for applicants to demonstrate knowledge of design and post creation. Strong sense of teamwork, leadership and creativity. Must be proactive and happy to dedicate time to the work they produce. This is an unpaid role.
